Hayden Island residents concerned about new plans

Over 40 people attended the "Citizens Bridge Impact Workshop" Saturday on Hayden Island.  The workshop, led by the Sustainability Clinic of Willamette University Law School, was very informative.  Subjects included discussion of the federal Environmental Protection Agency's and Multnomah County Health Department's concerns about issues with the current plans for the new I-5 bridge.

In addition, the workshop covered the legal rights that citizens have if citizen groups wish to articulate issues or concerns about plans for the bridge.

This is particularly important now that plans for the bridge on Hayden Island have been drastically altered to include demolishing the Safeway, the only grocery store/pharmacy on the island, and removing up to 35 other businesses that serve island residents, which will significantly impact livability on the island.

The current "refinements" will completely destroy most of the objectives of the Hayden Island Plan.

The refinements will be presented at the Project Sponsors Council on Dec. 4  It is important for island residents to organize a strong response to these refinements to present at that meeting, including a large number of residents appearing to testify that the refinements are not acceptable to the island community.

An Environmental Justice Group has been formed by island residents, which meets on the third Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m.

This month's meeting will be held on Thursday, Nov. 19, at 6:30 p.m., at South Shore Club House, 12221 N. Westshore Dr. (on the west side of the island behind NW Rugs on Hayden Island Dr.).

Concerned residents are encouraged to attend.
